As it stands, at the time of posting, there is no vaccine or treatment for COVID-19. A vaccine is, at least, 12-18 months away. And, at present, there is nothing available that successfully targets the virus in those who are already sick. Testing and approval of new medications just takes time.

At the moment our only treatment is the body’s own immune system. And, for the vast majority of people, their natural immune response is enough to rid the body of the virus within a few weeks. For those with weak or compromised immune systems, however, all doctors can do is keep people alive by using the resources available (ventilators, etc) and wait while the patient’s immune system, hopefully, does its job. In a small percentage of cases the immune system is too weak or compromised and the person dies.

There are currently several treatments being tested that involve drugs that have already been approved for other purposes. If these drugs prove to be beneficial, that is clearly going to be quicker than developing new drugs that specifically target the virus.

But, in the meantime …

To protect yourself from COVID-19 the official advice is very clear: practice  social distancing and …

Wash your hands!

Soap is one of the most effective ways to get rid of COVID-19. It dissolves the fatty layer that coats coronavirus.

One of the most consistent COVID-19 messages from health officials has been the importance of good personal hygiene. Part of the molecular makeup of the Coronavirus includes a layer of lipid or fat. When you wash with soap and water, you are breaking down that layer of fat that holds the coronavirus together and washing it off your skin.  I must emphasise that you must remember to wash your hands properly. Wash them vigorously for about 20 seconds. Be sure to wash the back of your hands and around all your fingers before you rinse. It’s simple, easy and effective.

Hand Sanitisers are a good option when soap and water are not around. It is good to have a small handy bottle in your bag but, they do leave our hands feeling dry due to the high alcohol levels in them and the amount you need to use to get a good coverage. You really only need a little soap as it goes a long way. Wombat Lagoon soaps are packed with natural oils that are designed specifically to keep your hands feeling soft and moisturised. As a general rule, it’s better to get news and information from credible sources, rather than social media or a blog (like this one). Australia’s ABC News is a great source of reliable information. Also, ABC’s daily podcast, Coronacast is a quick way to update yourself on what’s going on.
