How does it work?
When electricity jumps between the two conducting electrodes at the tip of the lighter, it produces what is known as an electric arc. The air between these electrodes becomes ionized creating the brilliant visual arc which produces high heat.

A Note on Safety
If your skin does happen to touch directly in the arc of the electric lighter you will get a small burn. The heat in the arc of this lighter is very hot and can cause some near instantaneous burns.

Luckily between the safety mechanisms on the lighter and proper use it is difficult to actually touch the arc unless you mean to. The space between the electrodes is very small and the arc is only a few millimetres wide. And it is easier to control a plasma arc than an open flame lighter. A plasma arc would not light anything by accident as a flame might do.

Care
Ensure the tip of the lighter is clean at all times. If there is residue or buildup around the tip, use a clean and dry toothbrush to gently brush it away. Do not use any abrasives or liquid cleaners. Only a dry brush or cloth.
